\(W_{w}  = Water\ Weight\)

\(W_{s}=Solid\ Weight\)

\(\text{G=Soil Specific Gravity}\)

\(\text{S=Degree of Saturation}\)

We can calculate the void ratio as follows:
\[e=\ \frac{W_{w} \times G }{W_{s} \times S}\]
\[\text{W=42 lbs (given) =} W_{w}+W_{s}\\\]

\[W_{s} \text{=34 lb (given)}\\\]

\[W_{w}=W-W_{s} \text{=42\ lb - 34 \ lb =8 lb}\\\]

\[e= \frac{8 \times 2.55}{34 \times 80 \% } = 0.75\\\]
