NCEES Civil PE Specification Analysis of Structures–Forces and Load Effects: Shear
Problem
The 120 ft tall and 60 ft wide building exhibits a rectangular structure as depicted in the figure. Horizontal wind forces apply pressure on the vertical faces, assumed to be uniformly distributed across the four distinct 'layers' illustrated in the diagram. Utilizing empirical formulas for wind pressures at the midpoint of each layer—12 psf for the first (lower) layer, 16 psf for the second layer, 20 psf for the third layer, and 25 psf for the top layer— Determine the resisting shear at the base of building.
