Practice Question: Shrinkage Limit on a Soil Sample

NCEES Civil PE Specification Materials: Soil Properties

Problem

You are determining the shrinkage limit (\(SL\)) of a soil sample. During the test, the mass of the wet soil pat in the shrinkage limit dish at the beginning (\(m_1\)) was 150 grams, and after oven-drying, the mass of the soil pat (\(m_2\)) was found to be 120 grams. The initial volume of the wet soil pat (\(V_i\)) was \(50 \ cm^3\), and the volume of the oven-dried soil pat (\(V_f\)) was \(40 \ cm^3\). The density of water \(\rho_w\) is \(1 \ g/cm^3\). Calculate the shrinkage limit (\(SL\)) of the soil.
