Practice Question: Volume of Earthwork Due to Excavation

NCEES Civil PE Specification Site Development: Excavation and embankment

Problem

A road construction project requires excavation of a ditch between two cross-sections 300 feet apart. The first cross-section is trapezoidal with a top width of 40 feet, a bottom width of 20 feet, and a depth of 10 feet. The second cross-section, due to varying terrain, has a top width of 30 feet, a bottom width of 15 feet, and a depth of 12 feet. Assuming linear transitions between cross-sections, use the average end-area method to calculate the volume of earthwork required for the ditch excavation.
